Twilight Tour of Graceland Cemetery

On June 17 at 7:00 p.m. our popular Twilight Tour of Graceland Cemetery will return.

Society President Rich Wallace and board secretary Linda DeVelvis will lead tour participants to the final resting places of some of Sidney’s most prominent or infamous citizens.   Their lives and contributions will be discussed, as will the interesting gravestones along the way.

Last year we discussed the lives of Civil War veterans, an inventor, immigrants, a gold rush 49-er, and the symbolism of a tree tombstone.  What will be discussed this year?  What new histories of Shelby County will you learn?  Join us to find out!

The tour is free and open to the public, although donations are appreciated.  Hours of research and staff hours go into preparing a program of this size.

September
September 1 - 12, 2010
Traveling Vietnam War Memorial

Beginning in September, the Shelby County Historical Society will remember the Vietnam War with an exhibit and programs.  The kickoff event will be a Healing Field of flags, held from September 1-12 at Custenborder Field in Sidney.  A flag can be purchased by individuals or businesses in honor of their military or local (police, firefighter, EMS) hero.  Flag sponsors are able to honor veterans both living and deceased from all wars.  The cost to honor your hero is only $30 and the flag will be returned to you after the event.  All the flags will be labeled, displayed in a strategic manner, and receive proper flag etiquette at all times.  The Healing Field offers a unique opportunity for the community to come together and remember those who have sacrificed so much for our country and community.  Please contact the Shelby County Historical Society if you would like more information on sponsoring a flag or visiting the Healing Field.

Order your flag now! Click here for the order form.

In conjunction with the Healing Field, the Traveling Vietnam War Memorial will be present at the site over Labor Day weekend (September 4-6).  The Traveling War Memorial is operated by American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) and travels the country with their 80% scaled replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall, found in Washington D.C.  In addition to the Wall replica, the AVTT presents exhibits on all the conflicts American soldiers have been involved in, as well as timelines, art, and a 9/11 memorial.  The AVTT has an amazing display that promises to be a moving experience for all visitors.  The AVTT display will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during their stay in Sidney.

On September 9 at 7 p.m., local Vietnam War veterans will share their stories of fighting in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam.  Held at the Ross Historical Center, the program is free and open to the public.  On September 11, the Shelby County Historical Society will officially open its Vietnam War exhibit entitled “APO Shelby: The Vietnam War Experience.”  Come to the Ross Historical Center to see artifacts from local Vietnam War veterans, as well as displays and information on the war that divided America and defined a generation.

Prior to these events, a Car Show and Sock Hop will be held on June 26 at the Ross Historical Center.  Proceeds from this event will help support the Vietnam War exhibit in September.  Registration for cars in the show is $15 and includes a registration package.  Entrance to the show is free to the public with food available and a DJ.  Tickets to the sock hop can be purchased in advance at the Ross Center for $15/couple and $10/individual.  Tickets prices increase $5 when purchased at the door.  Come dance the night away and support the Vietnam Exhibit all at the same time!

We hope to see you at all these exciting programs!  As these are all on a large scale, many volunteers are needed.  If you would like to help, please contact the Shelby County Historical Society at (937) 498-1653.
