Women's sports, such as girl's basketball, has always struggled for recognition, especially prior to WWII.  Other sports have experienced ebbs and flows in popularity -- from baseball in the 1950s to the soccer games of the 1990s.  You may be surprised to learn that the people of Shelby County, Ohio, who were on the 'cutting edge' of a sport's establishment or achieved great success in their own right.
