Gold Rush
With the discovery
of gold, there was a spur of Chinese and Latin American immigrants to the west coast.
Although this did not necessarily bring new settlers into Shelby County, Ohio, it did
cause people to leave the area. Tempted to seek a new start after surviving the depression
of 1837, 149 Shelby Countians (out of a population of 1,500) would eventually make the
journey to try their luck in California.
