Shelby County Block Houses
To protect themselves, residents would also construct
blockhouses on their property. Cephas Carey,
an early Shelby County settler, built a stockade on the Carey land for the protection of
those in the Hardin (Turtle Creek Township)
area, and during the War of 1812, it was occupied by a squad of
soldiers for more than a year. This community led to the founding of and
eventual establishment of the areas first (temporary) county seat.
