General James Amos

General Amos was born and raised in Monroe County. He had a successful career as a lawyer and public official before coming to Sidney in 1876. In January of that year he purchased the "Shelby County Democrat", becoming editor and publisher. Until 1891, Sidney had two weekly newspapers. General Amos (at right) decided to launch a daily paper, which he named "The Sidney Daily News".

Delia Amos

His daughter, Delia Amos, (pictured at right) managed the enterprise from its inception to 1905. She was the first female to occupy such a position of responsibility with a newspaper in Ohio.

During General Amos' long and successful career, he was involved in many community projects, however he never served in the Civil War. He was awarded his honorary title because he founded the Ohio National Guard.
