Sidney Tanning Company Produced by the Shelby County Historical Society in 1996
In the pioneer days, family fabrics were made in the home — using tanned calf-skins and cowhides. This was all changed when local businesses were established to meet the demand for tanning. One such company was The Sidney Tanning Company - one of the longest operating tanneries in the United States. Founded in 1836 by Mr. Neiswanger, it was closed in 1979. The building was eventually torn down and a city-owned, public parking lot is now located in its place.
