In November 2001, Albert Dickas received his first issue of Historical Highlights, the newsletter published by the Shelby County (Ohio) Historical Society. To his surprise, he found inside a story on I.H. Thedieck, a name he knew quite well, for two reasons. First, having been a lifelong student of history and also a native of Shelby County, he was quite familiar with the contributions Mr. Thedieck had made to the local community. Second, sitting on a shelf next to his desk as he read was a shaving mug he had inherited, on it was Mr. Thedieck’s name – a testimony both to the gentleman’s position in Sidney and to the profession of Dickas’ forbears as prominent owners of local barber shops.
Aware that the mug might be of interest to other local historians, Dickas called the newsletter editor, who encouraged him to write his own account of the mug and its owner. A dozen years and 50 stories followed.
This book is a compilation of those stories, each of which relates to the years Dickas spent growing up in Shelby County, and at the same time captures his other interests as a professional geophysicist, and enthusiastic historian, and an admirer of community leaders, and a natural story teller.
