The setting for this anthology of many stories is along the towpaths of the Miami and Erie Canal in western Ohio near the Indiana border in general, but the New Bremen, “Old Brementown,” in particular. The beautiful Blue Swan packed show barge from the canals of Europe was the property of the unusual Gast family whose forebears had come to Western Ohio from Alsace near old Strasbourg. The Swan barge changed the lives of many of the staid and conservative local tow path people in Brementown, but it definitely changed the loves of the Gast and Kattmann families and nearly all the people its voyages touched.
